How it works
What is kept, and who can see it
Arriving late is not arriving to nothing
A room opens showing the recent conversation, so somebody who has just landed can tell what is being talked about instead of staring at an empty box and leaving.
Scrolling back loads more
History pages as you scroll rather than loading everything at once, so a room with years in it opens as fast as a room with an hour in it.
A removed message stays removed
Moderation redacts the text in place rather than deleting the row, so the history does not silently rewrite itself and the record of who said what survives the argument about it.
People can clear their own
Clearing a conversation applies to the person who cleared it. It does not reach into anybody else’s copy, which is the behaviour people expect and the opposite of what "delete" does in some products.
Questions
- How long is history kept?
- How far back a room goes depends on the plan, and the larger plans keep more. What every plan does is show enough on opening that somebody arriving mid-conversation can join it.
- Can I export it?
- Room and conversation history is readable through the REST API on the plans that include it, which is how sites that need their own archive or their own reporting get one.
- Can administrators read private conversations?
- No. Moderation applies to private messages, but reading them is not something the dashboard offers, and that is a deliberate limit rather than a missing feature.
- What happens to history if somebody is banned?
- It stays. A ban stops somebody taking part; it does not rewrite what was already said, which would leave the rest of the conversation making no sense.
