Feature
Moderation that does not need you awake
Most of what a moderator does at two in the morning can be a rule instead. The rest is one click from any operator.
A filter you control
Use the standard list, add the words that matter on your site, or both. Filtered messages are caught on the way in, not edited afterwards.
Links, by who is posting
Allow links from members and above, strip them from newcomers, and keep a list of domains that are always allowed. New sites start at the strictest setting.
Bans that are per site
A ban applies to your site and says who applied it and when. Lifting it is one click, and it is not permanent by accident.
How it works
What happens to a message before anybody sees it
The rules run on the server
Not in the browser. A filter applied in the page is a suggestion, because anybody can open the console and send whatever they like. Every rule here is applied where the message is received, before it is stored or sent on.
Words, then links, then rate
The word filter checks the text, including the spaced-out and spelled-out forms people use to get around one. Link rules decide whether this member may post a URL at all. Rate limits catch the same message sent ten times.
Trust is a grade, not a switch
Link posting can be allowed for members and refused for guests, so a regular is not treated like a drive-by, and a drive-by cannot put a URL on your domain thirty seconds after arriving.
What gets through, you can still take back
Removing a message redacts it in place rather than deleting the row, so the text goes and the record of who said what survives for the argument about it afterwards.
Questions
- Do I need somebody watching the chat at night?
- That is the reason the rules run on the server: abuse, link spam and flooding are refused before anybody reads them, including at 3am when nobody is watching. What cannot be automated is judgement, so a report from a member still reaches you.
- Can guests post links?
- Only if you allow it, and a new site starts on the conservative setting. Link permission is set by member grade, so signed-in regulars can post URLs while somebody who typed a name a minute ago cannot.
- Is a ban permanent, and does it follow the person to other sites?
- A ban applies to your site only, never to that person across other Flyzoo customers, and it records who applied it and when. Lifting it is one click, so nothing becomes permanent by accident.
- Can I change the word list?
- Yes. The filter ships with a list and you add to it, which matters because the words that cause you trouble depend entirely on what your site is about.
