What changes on a phone
The panel takes the screen
A 340px window floating in the corner of a phone is a desktop layout shrunk. Opened on a phone the chat takes the screen, because that is the only size at which a conversation is actually readable and typeable.
The keyboard is accounted for
The composer stays above the on-screen keyboard rather than being pushed under it, which is the single most common way an embedded chat becomes unusable on a phone.
Operators too, not just visitors
The dashboard side works on a phone as well. This is the part most products skip, and it is the part that decides whether anybody can cover an evening without sitting at a desk.
It is the same account
Someone who was in the room on a laptop at lunchtime is the same member on their phone in the evening, with the same history and the same unread count.
Questions
- Is there an app to install?
- No. It runs in the browser on the phone, which is the point — your visitors are already on your site and asking them to install something to talk on it loses almost all of them.
- Does it work on iOS and Android?
- Yes, in the current versions of Safari, Chrome and the browsers built on them. There is no separate mobile build to keep in step, because it is the same widget responding to the space it has.
- Can operators answer from a phone?
- Yes. Taking a support conversation, seeing who is waiting and switching your status all work on a phone, which is what makes out-of-hours cover possible at all for a small team.
- Does a phone use more of my plan?
- No. Plans count how many people are in the chat at once, and a person on a phone is one person, the same as a person on a laptop.
