Feature
In the browser, with nothing to install
The whole chat is the page. No Flash, no Java, no extension, and nothing a visitor has to agree to install before they can say hello.
It works where your visitors are
Every current browser, on every platform, including the ones on a locked-down work laptop.
Behind corporate proxies too
Where WebSockets are blocked the connection falls back rather than failing, so the chat still works on the networks that block things.
It does not take over the page
The widget is scoped so it cannot inherit or leak your page’s styles.
How it works
Nobody installs anything
No plugin, no download, no app
It is JavaScript in a page. Not Flash, not Java, not a browser extension, and not an app your visitors have to be persuaded onto — every one of which is a reason somebody does not join the conversation.
It runs in the browser they already have
Current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on a desktop and on a phone. No version of the widget has to be chosen or kept in step, because there is only one.
It does not take them off your site
The conversation happens in your page. Nobody is redirected to a chat service, and nobody ends up on somebody else’s domain in order to talk about yours.
It cleans up after itself
The widget renders inside a shadow root, so its styles cannot leak into your page and your CSS cannot reach in and break it after an unrelated redesign.
Questions
- Do visitors need to install anything at all?
- Nothing. No app, no extension, no plugin, and no account before they can read. Typing a name is the only thing ever asked of somebody, and only when they want to say something.
- Does it need Flash or Java?
- No. Both are long dead, and a chat product still depending on either would not run at all in a current browser. This is ordinary JavaScript talking to an API.
- What about old browsers?
- Current versions of the major browsers are supported. A browser old enough not to run it is old enough to be a security problem for the person using it.
- Will it interfere with my page?
- The shadow root is the guarantee it does not. Its styles are its own and yours are yours, which is the same isolation an iframe provides without an iframe’s sizing problems.
